The origin of St. Kieran Church dates back to June 8, 1962 when Cardinal Dearden outlined the boundaries for our parish. Three weeks later Reverend Edward Obuchowski was installed as Pastor on June 24, 1962. Ground breaking for the temporary church building took place on July 1, 1962. During construction, Sunday Mass was held at Ewell School.
The first parish picnic happened in September 1962 and this event has become a yearly tradition. The theme for the first picnic was "Howdy Neighbor", a day of festivities for neighbors to meet. This event helped kick start the growth of the parish. In November 1962, the temporary cornerstone for the church was laid and the church was dedicated on December 13 of that year.
Since the parish was growing, in 1964 the parish built a rectory and purchased a home on Fordham to house the resident nuns and add facilities for religious education classes. By 1970 the parish had outgrown the temporary church building and in March that year we broke ground for a permanent building.
The church was completed in May 1971 and was designed to seat 1,000 people. Fr. "Obie" served as Pastor for 25 years, until 1987. Our second Pastor, Fr. Donald MacLennan, saw the need for an expanded facility to accommodate the needs of a growing parish. In 1992 ground was broken for the complex we have today. The new building added 32,000 additional square feet and included the gathering space, chapel, Green Room, kitchen, bathrooms, permanent classrooms and the gym. The complex was dedicated by Cardinal Adam Maida in February 1994. Monsignor Thomas Johnson became the third Pastor in December 1995 and by this time the parish had grown to 3,000 families.
Over the years many priests and deacons have ministered to us, including Fr. Simon Hesse OFM Cap., Monsignor Frank Koper, Fr. Richard Ugolik, Fr. Charles Zeeb, Fr. Richard Cyr, Deacon Ron Cook, Deacon Jim Cronin, Deacon Steve Marks , Deacon Alex Jablonowski. We were blessed to have Sr. Paula Connor OP and Sr. Miriam Kroha OP serve the parish for over 30 years. Their ministry touched numerous people in many ways, including marriage and Baptism preparation, leading Bible Study classes, ministering to the sick and dying and conducting wake services. Fr. Joe Mallia is the current Priest assigned to serve the people of our parish along with Deacon Russ Ortisi, our latest Deacon.
After many years of prayer and discernment in 2013 the worship space underwent a major renovation, including adding windows, a new altar, new tile, and pews. In December 2014 the Church and Altar were dedicated by Archbishop Allen Vigneron. In 2020 Fr. Joe Mallia became the fourth Pastor. Under his leadership, he navigated Covid-19 mandates and facility restrictions to help us become the thriving parish we are today. Our parish has grown to 3,275 families and continues to faithfully serve the people of Shelby Township.
We are thankful for all those who made sacrifices so that we can worship, learn and enjoy fellowship in such a holy and beautiful environment. Our complex, with it's striking pyramid structure, is a pillar of the community and a beacon of light and joy to all who enter!
